Melissa Rightor

M.S., SLP ASHA

Melissa is a speech-language pathologist living in North Carolina.  She holds her American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) certification.  She attended Ithaca College where she completed her undergraduate studies and furthered her studies at Kent State University, graduating with master’s degree in speech-language pathology in 2005.  Since that time, she has been working in a variety of settings including schools, home health, and private clinics.

Melissa has experience working with children from birth to 21 years with a variety of different diagnoses including autism spectrum disorder, cleft lip/palate, developmental delays, Down Syndrome, neurological deficits, Cerebral Palsy, deaf and hard of hearing, failure to thrive, sensory processing disorders, attention deficit/learning disorders, metabolic disorders, and genetic disorders.  Melissa completed specialty training in the PROMPT technique for working with children and adults with motor speech disorders and is completing her PROMPT certification project now.

Melissa also has specialized experience working with children who are deaf and hard of hearing.  She is conversationally proficient in American Sign Language and believes in utilizing multiple teaching modalities including speech, sign language, and auditory training to maximize the abilities of these children to be proficient in all areas of language learning and verbal expression.

Melissa has specialized experience working with children with feeding/swallowing disorders.  Melissa is a Vital Stim certified clinician for treatment of swallowing disorders and is certified in the McNeill Dysphagia Therapy Program, an exercise-based therapy framework for working with patients with mild to severe swallowing disorders.  She is also a licensed Neonatal Oral Motor Assessment Scale (NOMAS) provider.

Melissa grew up in Pennsylvania but enjoys the weather and outdoor lifestyle that comes with living in Raleigh.  In her free time, Melissa enjoys playing tennis, sewing, cooking, exercising, and spending time with her husband and young daughter.
