Having Trouble Communicating? 11 Tips For Wearing a Mask in School

Teachers and District Administrators certainly understand the necessity to wear a mask for everyone’s safety, but the prospect of wearing one all day long is daunting for many.

The questions abound. Will it be comfortable to talk and teach for up to eight hours in a mask? How will wearing a mask impact instruction, especially for younger children and English-language learners? Will covering their face impede forming relationships with new students?

Therapist of the Month

Renee Matthews

Renee Matthews is our therapist of the month for October! Renee is a stellar therapist for Global Teletherapy. She is always a pleasure to work with and does great with her students. Renee starred on an episode of SPEDtalk recently to discuss how to avoid a summer slump! She gave wonderful tips on how to move it, not lose it! Check it out here.

Here’s a little more about Renee:

I just finished my first school year working in the teletherapy setting through Global Teletherapy and I have enjoyed it very much! I graduated with my Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy in 2016 from Seton Hall University and I started out working in the inpatient rehabilitation setting (working with clients with Cardiac Conditions, Stroke, Neurological Conditions, Spinal Cord Injury, Brain Injury, Orthopedic Conditions, and Respiratory Conditions). I transitioned from the inpatient rehabilitation setting to the school-based pediatric setting and I have experience working in private and public school-based settings (with students aged 3-21 with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Developmental Delays, Down Syndrome, Multiple Disabilities, Behavioral Disabilities, Learning Disabilities, ADHD, and Communication Disabilities). The world of teletherapy has opened up a whole new world of creative opportunities for me! I just recently jumpstarted an Instagram and YouTube page to share therapy-related information and activity ideas for therapists and parents (as I really enjoy sharing information with others and making videos!). I look forward to continuing my teletherapy journey with the awesome GT team!
